Man in coat tells police he was beaten to death in car after beating his ex-girlfriend

MANHATTAN, Kan.

— A man who was beaten and killed in a car in Kansas City is being sought by authorities, police said.

The man, identified by police as 26-year-old Joseph G. Gage, was found unconscious Saturday in a ditch about 5 miles from the Kansas City metro area.

He had been hit in the head with a metal pipe, police told local news station KSHB.

A search of the vehicle turned up blood and a handgun.

Police said Gage had a lengthy criminal record and was previously arrested on charges of battery and resisting arrest.

A spokesman for the Kansas Department of Corrections did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
