‘It’s just a man’s life’: Woman says she was raped by her husband in India
“It’s a man.
It’s just his life.”
This is what my husband said to me.
He’s a good man, but it’s not good.
“I said, ‘You know what?
I’m going to tell you what I know.
I’m not going to keep you waiting’.”
His wife was in a position of power, he said.
She had to tell him to stop.
But the truth was, it wasn’t going to be easy.
“I have two daughters, and I know how hard it is for my husband,” he said, shaking his head.
“But I don’t think I’m the only one who’s been raped in my life.
I’ve been raped by my friends.
I know what it feels like.”
I was at a party, and the whole place was filled with men.
And I was sitting there with my friends, and one guy comes up to me and says, ‘Oh, I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you’.
“I thought, Oh, I’ve got no right to be angry with him.”
The next day, I called the police.
I don’t know how I got to this point, but I knew that if I was going to stay silent, I had to speak out.
I knew I was not going away, but there was a lot I wanted to say.
So I went to the police station, and there was nothing I could do.
I was told that they were going to put me in a room and take me to the hospital.
I knew I could not do anything about it.
I had no right.
The police then made me stand up and walk towards them.
They put me on a stretcher, and took me to a room.
I wasn’t told what I was supposed to do.
They said, You’re a woman, we’re going to take care of you.
The next morning, I went into the hospital, and they had a doctor and two nurses, who took me back to the room and left.
I was very angry.
I didn`t know how to react.
I said to them, I was raped.
They didn`T believe me.
I went back to my house and cried.
They didn`ts even give me a name.
It was just like they had taken me away from my family and put me here.
“The next thing I knew, I started to panic, and my husband had called the ambulance.
The ambulance arrived, and two doctors came in.
They told me that I was in the emergency room.
They told me to come in and tell them everything, and if I don`t tell them what happened, I`ll die.”
The first doctor told me I was an alcoholic, and that I had been drinking alcohol for months.
The second doctor told us that I`d never been raped.
I said to him, I don,t remember what happened.
They asked if I had any witnesses.
I don`,t know what they were asking.
I told them, They`re not telling me what happened because they want to see my daughter.
They`ll take her away.
He went away, and he`s been gone for three months.
But there was no follow up.
I just said, I told you, I did not tell them.
I thought that if the police were going on with their investigation, they would know.
Then they asked if they could give me some blood.
I refused.
They took me in the back of the ambulance, and then I was taken to a clinic.
The first doctor was really angry.
He said, This is what you`ve been doing for the past three months, and you haven`t told us anything.
They said, Well, this is what we are doing, because you`re an alcoholic.
The next doctor was even more angry.
They went away.
I kept saying, I want to tell the police, I have been drinking for three years.
I`m not drunk.
They kept saying no, we don`ts want to hear about it, and this was the end.
I kept asking them, Why don`s they want me to be a witness?
I said, What are you saying?
They said that if you don`tray, you`ll be arrested.
I went back and asked them, Are you going to give me your blood?
And they said, No.
I got scared.
I asked them if I could go with them.
They put me back on the stretcher.
I told them I had never been sexually assaulted.
They never told me anything.
I think that was the most terrifying thing.
They let me go, but when I got back to school, they put me at another police station.
They just kept asking me questions.
I`m still trying to find out what happened to me after I`ve gone through this.
I want the police to know what happened
